Most times when businesses need a roofer, they’re less concerned about aesthetics and more concerned about using the most energy and cost efficient types of roofing materials. The keyword there being most

Some architects have gone above and beyond the pragmatic requirements, designing some of the most interesting, aesthetically pleasing roof types and shapes to ever appear in the world of architecture.

Here for you now are some of the most interesting roofs in the world.

Mina’s Water Reservoir.

The roof of the Water Reservoir at Mina near Saudi Arabia’s holy city of Makkah caters to around 2 million people who make pilgrimages to Mina each year. Most concrete types of roofing that are cable stayed tend to be smaller, but this roof has a massive diameter of 365 meters, making it one of the world’s largest cable-stayed concrete shell roofs in the world, defying the limitations of other concrete types of roofing.

Nanyang Technological University.

Singapore’s School of Art, Design and Media at the Nanyang Technology University recently got a brand new, completely organic, vegetated roof that not only insulates the building, cools it down in the summer, and self-irrigates by harvesting rainwater, but also creates more open space.

Hotel Marques de Riscal.

The Hotel Marques de Riscal in Alava, Spain has a ribbon-like roof that appears to wave and billow in the air. It was an exercise meant to reinvent the traditional image of Spanish winery regions. What’s more, Frank O. Gehry commissioned the entire structure — the same architect who did the Guggenheim Museum.

There’s a lesson here — just because you should use cost efficient roofing materials types doesn’t mean you have to compromise your roof’s aesthetics! There are tons of interesting types of roofing, you just need to imagine the possibilities.
